Sun in the First Face of Leo – Against Seizures and Lunar Illness
“If, under the influence of the Sun, you write the figures below in a sedina (carnelian) stone with the Sun rising in the first face of Leo, whoever carries this stone will be protected against the lunar illnesses that come from the combustion of the Moon.” (Picatrix Book 2, Ch. 10, pg 107)

For Healing Lunar Illnesses
“Hermes Trismegistus explains in his book On Images how to calculate images for each and every part of the human body and under which face of the signs to make them.”
Picatrix Book 2 contains a mysterious set of sigils to be engraved on carnelian while the Sun is in the first face of Leo, which it says has the ability to heal or mitigate “lunar illnesses that come from the combustion of the moon”.
The first difficulty I faced was identifying what exactly “lunar illnesses” were. I have witnessed many extraordinary results from using astrological talismans as complimentary therapy to modern medicine and was determined to find potential uses for this intriguing talisman. When Picatrix was compiled over a thousand years ago, medicine was based on the model of the four humors of the body, elemental in nature (fire, water, air, and earth), as well as its astrological correspondences (see the Zodiac Man and melosthesia for more information). Adding further difficulty is the fact that very few people today, aside from historians, find any value in studying or even preserving knowledge of ancient medicine. Quality information is sparse, but I finally obtained the excellent academic work “Medieval Medicine: the Art of Healing from Head to Toe” by Luke Demaitre. After close study, I found in chapter 4 that the cause of epilepsy was attributed to a severe imbalance of humors originating from the moon, especially combustion, which is when the Moon is “burned” by being too close to the Sun. which was said to influence the body’s fluids, and therefore the body and brain. Seizures and similar illnesses seemed to be the most likely candidate and one was tested on a person who had suffered for months from seizures multiple times every day. I advised him to wear this talisman on his body with skin contact, a carnelian wire wrapped in copper wire, and that week he reported to me that his condition stopped that same day and he had only mild dizziness on occasion. Another was tested for a condition called “silent seizures” and the condition was gone within a month and has not resurfaced.
I am continuing to research medieval medicine in the hopes of finding more uses of this talisman as an amazing complimentary therapy.
The underlying foundation of these talismans, called the Zodiac Man or melothesia, is a fascinating glimpse into our collective past as it dates back to the beginning of written history in ancient Mesopotamia almost 5,000 years ago, and was even used in ancient Egypt and even Mesoamerican cultures such as the Maya and Aztecs long before history recorded any trans-Atlantic contact between the Old and New Worlds, which you can read about here.
These talismans have proven to be an amazing complimentary therapy in many instances, which you can read about in the testimonials. They are not intended to replace treatment from a licensed medical professional and are intended to be used as complimentary therapies and historical research purposes only.
Election Standard
Picatrix simply states to craft this talisman with the Sun rising in the first face of Leo. I chose an election with the Sun in 0 Leo in the day and hour of the Sun, and the Sun is unafflicted. I have noticed a consistent pattern with healing talismans throughout Picatrix in that it often wants the significator planet in the earliest degrees of its face. The Moon is in its joy, the 3rd House, unafflicted and conjoining the Part of Fortune which is an excellent source of strength and occurs at the moment the Sun reaches the Ascendant. This was an especially rare opportunity because the Sun is only in the first degree of Leo one day per year, which Agrippa states is especially useful for health. For this to occur on a Sunday (day and hour of the sun), which occurs only once every seven years on average, and for both the Sun and Moon to have no afflictions creates an astrological opportunity that occurs only once or twice in a lifetime.
How the Talismans Were Crafted
Because of the rarity of this opportunity, I put my lifetime of experience with drawing and painting to good use and managed to engrave dozens of these talismans in the short 23 minute time window. I wanted maximum output because of the excellent results I had seen from these talismans made in years prior. I engraved large, high quality carnelians, many smaller and more affordable carnelians, and also engraved other images on gold-filled brass and silver with the remaining time. After the 23 minutes had passed, I suffumigated each talisman with Razielis Sun incense made by Adley Nichols, which is specially made according to stringent instructions from the 16th century grimoire Liber Razielis and very suitable for spiritual work. This talisman is crafted with a two ounce, AAA grade carnelian and wire wrapped in copper for use as a pendant.
