Sun in 1st Degree of Leo – Healing Sicknesses, Melancholy, Stomach,  Kidneys

Picatrix contains eight different talismans for healing several different ailments with the Sun in Leo.  Out of the entire book, the Sun in Leo is by far the most often recommended for healing. The kidneys are mentioned most often, but it is also stated to be useful for easing symptoms of certain types of fevers and unspecified sicknesses, stomach ailments, “bad thoughts” which may mean depression in modern terms, and even said to be especially useful for quickly improving the health of elderly people.

The underlying foundation of these talismans, called the Zodiac Man or melothesia, is a fascinating glimpse into our collective past as it dates back to the beginning of written history in ancient Mesopotamia almost 5,000 years ago, and was even used in ancient Egypt and even Mesoamerican cultures such as the Maya and Aztecs long before history recorded any trans-Atlantic contact between the Old and New Worlds, which you can read about here.

These talismans have proven to be an amazing complimentary therapy in many instances, which you can read about in the testimonials. They are not intended to replace treatment from a licensed medical professional and are intended to be used as complimentary therapies and historical research purposes only. 

 Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, in his second of Three Books of Occult Philosophy, states that Sun in Leo talismans provide relief for fevers, palsy, dropsy, gout (arthritis) and various other sicknesses.  He also states that a talisman created with the Sun in 0 Leo is especially effective at relieving these same ailments, with the addition of expelling melancholy (depression in modern terms), much like Picatrix states that the first face of Leo is effective for “taking away bad thoughts”.

According to Picatrix, talismans for healing are best used by wearing them with skin contact, and if feasible, placing them on the afflicted area.  Of note is that the writer of Picatrix compiled information from over 200 older sources to create something similar to an encylopedia; he took a neutral approach to the information and rarely states his own opinion. In several instances he states that he had personally used Leo talismans successfully.

“Hermes Trismegistus explains in his book On Images how to calculate images for each and every part of the human body and under which face of the signs to make them. Take pure gold and make a seal and write on it the image of a lion, with the Sun in Leo in the first or second face and in the Ascendant or midheaven, and the Moon not in her house, and the lord of the Ascendant not applying to an aspect with Saturn or Mars or separating from them. Bind the seal around the loins or kidneys. I have tested this and found that one who does this will not suffer thereafter. I have also seen also a doctor use this seal to seal olibanum like wax; and patients that were given the seal in a drink were immediately freed from their illness. I myself have made and sealed pills of goat's blood according to this method and it worked miraculously. This happens likewise for the sufferings of the other members of the body, according to their manner and form, and the appropriate symbolism of the planets. (Picatrix, Book 2, Ch. 12, pg 121)

“In the hour of the Sun, to take away bad thoughts and to heal infirmities of the stomach, make an image with the Sun rising in the first face of Leo and this image is strong and is said and quickly heals the infirmities of the elderly. “ (Picatrix Book 2, Ch. 10, page 111)

“It is profitable against fevers, palsy, dropsy, gout, and all cold and phlegmatick infirmities, and that it makes him who carrieth it to be acceptable, eloquent, ingenious and honorable, because they are the Houses of Mars, Sol, and Jupiter. They made also the image of a Lion against melancholy phantasies, the Dropsy, Plague, fevers, and to expel diseases, at the hour of the Sun, the first degree of the sign of Leo ascending, which is the face and Decan of Jupiter; but against the Stone, and diseases of the Reins, and against the hurts of beasts, they made the same image when Sol in the heart of the Lion obtained the midst of heaven..”

Picatrix simply states to craft this talisman with the Sun rising in the first face of Leo. I chose an election with the Sun in 0 Leo in the day and hour of the Sun, and the Sun is unafflicted. I have noticed a consistent pattern with healing talismans throughout Picatrix in that it often wants the significator planet in the earliest degrees of its face. The Moon is in its joy, the 3rd House, unafflicted and conjoining the Part of Fortune which is an excellent source of strength and occurs at the moment the Sun reaches the Ascendant. Overall, this astrological configuration was ideal and a rare opportunity.

How the Talismans Were Crafted

Putting my lifetime of experience with speed drawing and painting to good use, I managed to rapidly engrave dozens of these talismans in the short 23 minute time window.  I wanted maximum output because of the excellent results I had seen from these talismans made in years prior.  I engraved large,AAA grade carnelians, many smaller and more affordable carnelians, and also engraved other images of a lion with the paleo-Hebrew words for “God Heals” on gold-filled brass and silver with the remaining time.  After the 23 minutes had passed, I suffumigated each talisman with Razielis Sun incense made by Adley Nichols, which is specially made according to stringent instructions from the 16th century grimoire Liber Razielis and very suitable for spiritual work.
