Saturn in Aquarius

Saturn is known as the Greater Malefic in astrology and is the oldest and most feared of the planetary deities.  This fear is often taken too far and is unfounded with astrological magic. When Saturn is dignified and exerts his beneficial influences, he is without peer in the gifts he bestows.  According to Agrippa, Book 2 Chapter 22, Saturn "helps to bring forth or birth, and to make a man safe and powerful, and to cause success of petitions with princes and powers".  A Saturn talisman influences people in positions of authority to favor its owner.  In the later Solomonic traditions, Saturn was used to find minerals and hidden treasures. One of Saturn's powers is to discover hidden things and secrets.

According to Picatrix, Saturn also provides the incredible gift of longevity, lengthening a person's life.  Although Saturn is infamous for his association with melancholy, when he is dignified he is said to relieve it.  In fact, Saturn can provide many of the same spiritual benefits as Jupiter.  According to Picatrix, Book 3, Chapter 7, page 155:  "Ask Saturn in petitions concerning old people or generous men, senators and rulers of cities, hermits, those who labor in the earth, restoration of citizenship and inheritance, distinguished men, farmers, builders of buildings, servants, thieves, fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers. If you find yourself in contemplation and sorrow, or in melancholy or grave illness, in anything just named, or in any thing that has already been mentioned as belonging to Saturn, and you ask for something that belongs to his nature, you may seek it from him in the manner we describe below, and you may also help yourself in your petition by means of Jupiter."

Election Standard

Saturn rises in Aquarius in his hour, the sign where he rejoices and rules. Both Saturn and the Moon are oriental (east) of the sun, providing an extra boost of strength.

Picatrix Book 2, Chapter 12, page 127 states, “you should know that the aspects of the Moon with planets are more powerful when the Moon is oriental of the Sun and in front of him…” 

The Moon is powerful in an angular house (10th), very fast (14.1) and aspecting her ruler Jupiter with reception by square. By medieval astrology standards in Picatrix, squares and even oppositions with benefics are desirable, although not as perfect as a trine. In this case, the moon has excellent qualities, aspecting her sign ruler Jupiter while in the Term of Venus.

This is a particularly good aspect according to Picatrix, page 75, “put them in a trine aspect and received by Jupiter or the lord of his house in a trine or sextile aspect; get the Moon in a term of Venus, made fortunate by Jupiter, and free from the infortunes.”

This is an especially powerful election and meets the optimal criteria put forth in Picatrix.  The moon is out of orb for a to sextile Saturn and this may concern some who are leery of any and all aspect with malefics, but Picatrix states that the moon increasing in light while beholding Saturn is a grave affliction; the moon’s light is waning here.

Two benefics are with Saturn in the first house, the Sun and Jupiter, the latter of which is highly dignified in his domicile of Pisces and rules the second house. Jupiter is combust but is in Chariot, protected from the effects.  Picatrix often recommends putting fortunes in the first or tenth house whenever possible, such as page 71: “You should know that the ascendant is more fortunate and stronger if it has a fortune in the sign that is rising, and also in the second house.”  The second house rules, among other things, money and possessions, The tenth rules career, authority, and is the second strongest house after the first.

How The Were Made

Talismans were engraved in turquoise, sapphire, lapis lazuli, onyx, brown jasper and lead, all of which are ruled by Saturn according to traditional sources like Picatrix and Agrippa. Obsidian is ruled by Saturn according to the Greek Magical Papyri (PGM). Saturn herbal materials (sage, cumin and fumitory) were attached and suffumigated with Saturn incense from Liber Razielis.
