Image of Mars and Venus -First Face of Scorpio (Picatrix)

The image of Mars according to the opinion of Hermes is the form of a nude man standing erect on his feet and before him on the right is a beautiful maiden standing on her feet, which is the form of Venus; and her hair is fastened in the back; and Mars is placing his right hand on her neck and his left hand is stretched out above her breast, and he is facing her and gazing upon her. The sages say that this figure has great powers and very great effects.” (Picatrix, Book 2, Chapter 10, page 102)

“In the hour of Mars, Mars rising in the first face of Scorpio, make an image for strengthening timidity and humbling the anger of a king and to turn aside robbers, wolves, wild beasts and all evil doers.” (Picatrix, Book 2 Chapter 10, page 111)

“They made another Image of Mars for the obtaining of boldness, courage, and good fortune in wars, and contentions, the form of which was a soldier armed and crowned, girt with a sword, carrying in his right hand a long lance; and they made this at the hour of Mars, the first face of Scorpio ascending with it.” (Agrippa, Second Book of Occult Philosophy, Chapter 40)

Mars in the first face of Scorpio is especially potent according to Picatrix and Agrippa. Rising in this face at night, Mars has dignity by Domicile, Triplicity and Face. Marsilio Ficino in his Three Books on Life recommended Mars talismans made in this face for helping timid people overcome their issues.

Picatrix recommends it against timidity as well and says that it helps against a wide variety of problems like robbers and aggressive animals. Agrippa says that it makes its owner bold and courageous and is helpful in wars and other forms of conflict.

Mars rising before the Sun in the later degrees of Scorpio also makes this a particularly potent Decan talisman, according to Picatrix which recommends utilizing the Sun in face elections as optimal.

This talisman is engraved with a unique image of a nude man and woman, representing Mars and Venus respectively which Picatrix attributes to Hermes and adds, "the sages say that this figure has great powers and very great effects."

Because of the Mars and Venus imagery, an election was chosen with Mars and Venus harmoniously aspecting each other.

Who Is This For?

Mars is ideal for anyone who leads a demanding life requiring stamina, mental energy or dealing with constant conflict of some kind. Mars is universally known as the planet associated with war and conflict and was the patron deity of soldiers and combatants throughout ancient times. The introduction of iron in weapons of war 3,000 years ago changed the course of world history, and iron has long been considered the metal of Mars.

Stones and other metals attributed to Mars according to Agrippa include:

“Among metals, iron, and red brass, and all fiery, red, and sulfurous things. Among stones the diamond, lodestone, bloodstone, and jasper of diverse kinds, and the amethyst.” (Agrippa, First Book of Occult Philosophy, Chapter 27)

“The Amethyst, as saith Hermes, is under Mars, Jupiter, and the Heart of the Scorpion (Antares)” (Agrippa Book 1, Chapter 32)

Picatrix says,

“Of the metals, Mars has red copper and all kinds of sulfur and has part of glass and premonada, bloodstone and part of carnelian and onyx and in all stones that are red and tawny or speckled.” (Picatrix Book 2, Chapter 10)

In modern times the uses of Mars’ influences are not limited to war or battle in the conventional sense. Conflicts of all kinds are a part of daily life. Many people have reported a constant surge of natural energy while wearing a well-crafted Mars talisman, from college students cramming for exams late at night, athletes looking to boost their performance, people working long hours at their job, decreased need for sleep, and even increased sexual stamina. This may be because Scorpio is associated with the sex organs.

“Scorpio rules, among the organs of the body, all of the sexual organs of men and women, among colors, green, red and tawny.” (Picatrix Book 3, Chapter 3, page 138)

Many described the effects as “natural speed” and limit its use to only a few days at a time because of the decreased need for sleep. Some have reported painkiller effects, alleviating chronic aches and pains and boosting their physical activity.

If you want a special Mars talisman, this is certainly one to consider.

Election Standard

Mars rises in his hour in 8 Scorpio, dignified by Domicile, Triplicity and Face. Mars is also in the Term of Venus.  Venus in Capricorn is applying to sextile Mars, his Exaltation, and receives him. The Moon first applies to sextile Venus and receives her by Exaltation before applying a trine to Mars, both in signs of their Triplicity,

The aspects between Mars and Venus is especially fitting for the image of Mars and Venus found in Picatrix.

How They Were Made

I used amethysts, rubies, carnelians, bloodstone, steel discs and steel to engrave the images by hand using an electric-powered engraving tool. They were suffumigated with Mars incense made per Liber Razielis, a 16th century Solomonic grimoire.
