Talisman of Bilauanus

Healing Sciatica & Lower Back Pain (Jupiter & Moon in Pisces)

(Book of the Treasure of Alexander)

“Talisman of Bilauanus, which signifies pains in the sciatic nerve, which is an affliction of intense pain. When this malady reaches a person, they will forget about all other pains and illnesses in the past, due to the severe pain this condition causes, stretching from the thighs to the feet along the complete length of the nerve.

“If you seek to make a talisman to remove this evil, when Jupiter is in his cold and moist house which is Pisces, take forty-nine mithqals of lead and make a belt with a central plate weighing six mithqals the size of the palm of the hand and engrave on the plate its figure. If you wish to eliminate this affliction for anyone, place the Moon conjunct Jupiter in Pisces or Cancer. Give the belt to the person who is afflicted who will then tie the belt and put the engraved plate upon the place of pain and keep it there until the pain disappears.” (Book of the Treasure of Alexander, The Fifth Art – Talismanic Remedies, Poison Edition)

For Healing Sciatica and Lower Back Pain

Crafting and using these talismans have been an extraordinary experience. When I first read Book of the Treasure of Alexander (BTOA) this talisman caught my eye because of numerous injuries to my lower back over the years, and the chronic pain that resulted. These injuries are incurable, very difficult to treat, and I was eager to try anything for relief.

As of the time of this writing, these have been used by eleven other people, and eight experienced results that match what the text claims will happen: “the pain disappears”. This is an incredible success rate and I consider these among the most valuable things I’ve ever discovered.

At first glance this talisman was somewhat unappealing for several reasons. First, the requirement that it be made of a sizeable piece of lead (the size of the palm of the hand) and worn directly on the body was of concern. Lead exposure via prolonged skin contact is now understood to be a health risk. However, I decided to try wrapping it in a piece of cloth while applying it to the affected area so the lead would not be a problem.

Second, good Jupiter elections hard to find. It is the second slowest moving planet. The text says that the Moon must be conjoining Jupiter in Pisces. For perspective: Jupiter is in the sign of Pisces for only one out of every 12 years (approximately). During that one year, the Moon will conjoin Jupiter only 12 times, and for a talisman to be made there are so many more factors to consider. Each second of a high-quality election time window is priceless. The complexity of the image and the 28 symbols surrounding it would take much longer to engrave than for most other talismans. But a chance to have any relief, even a small amount, from the pain of a lower back injury was well worth taking if it proved successful. Because I was experimenting with a talisman for personal use only, I did not observe a normal rule of Jupiter day and/or hour, only that the significators Jupiter and the Moon were not afflicted.

After I had crafted my first Talisman of Bilauanus I wrapped it in cloth and placed it in my back pants pocket on the right side. I’ve suffered from sciatica for over a decade in my right leg and the pain can vary from mild to somewhat severe. That morning the pain was moderate, and I did not experience instant relief (the text does not give a time estimate to work) so I decided to give it a chance and go about my day. However, by evening I suddenly realized that I had felt zero sciatica symptoms for several hours. It had quietly went away without me even realizing it. The next morning I felt some pain but much more mild. I also should note that I did not wear the talisman while I slept. After four days of keeping it in my back pocket the sciatica symptoms I’d suffered for over a decade were completely gone.

Around a year later, I had an accident that resulted in a lumbar spine injury (L4 and L5) that put me in the emergency room, and it was one of the most painful things I have ever felt. Opiates and painkillers did little to help and my prognosis was not hopeful; it was very likely that I was going to have debilitating pain from this lower spine injury for the rest of my life. Unless my talisman could help. I put it in my back pocket like before and felt some noticeable relief in four hours, but not nearly enough. I struggled to slowly walk and sleep was near impossible because of the pain. I was truly terrified that it could last the rest of my life.

This talisman had worked great for sciatica but could it work for the lower back in general? The text strongly implies it is a remedy for what we now call sciatica (which has a signature “traveling” pain down the leg), which is caused by injury to a certain portion of the lower spine. But this injury was technically different and radiating from the center of lower back. Keeping the talisman directly on the area at all times was a challenge as well. I looked to the source text and found a clue: the Talisman of Bilauanas was supposed to be worn on a belt per the instructions.

A large portion of Book of the Treasure of Alexander is ancient alchemy recipes (many of them dangerous) and it instructs the creator of the talisman to first craft a belt from a half pound of lead and then attach the talisman to the belt after it is engraved under a suitable Jupiter election. “Give the belt to the person who is afflicted who will then tie the belt and put the engraved plate upon the place of pain and keep it there until the pain disappears.” In other words: tie a belt around the waist to hold the talisman in the area where the pain is coming from.

Using lead of all things to make a separate belt that itself is not an astrological talisman made no sense to me and may be something alchemical. I improvised and put my talisman in a small bag made of burlap. After I’d fastened my pants, I tied it to the back of my leather belt with nylon cord so the belt held it securely on the area that was injured. In eight hours, the pain was reduced by about 70 percent. I was walking normally again and it had went from debilitating agony to a relative nuisance. The relief was so profound that I even slept with this talisman on me, and in four days I was completely pain-free. This was a miracle in every way and I used every opportunity to make more of them.

As mentioned earlier, eleven other people have used this extraordinary talisman, some of whom have struggled with severe lower back pain and/or sciatica for years or even decades. Eight people experienced relief similar to what the talisman did for me, and the one who was not a complete success got enough relief that he still wears it every day.

Book of the Treasure of Alexander (BTOA) or Kitab Thakhirat al-Iksander in Arabic, is something of an exotic grimoire in astrological magic. Picatrix and Agrippa’s Three Books of Occult Philosophy are the most popular and well known, but BTOA is unfortunately overlooked and underutilized, partially due to the unusually stringent astrological configurations it requires and because of its very limited circulation. Many of its astrological talismans can only be made once or twice in a lifetime, and some are difficult to find once in a century. I’ve found that they are often extremely effective if the instructions are followed carefully. The mysterious history of this grimoire is fascinating. As old as Picatrix, the oldest known manuscripts originate in Arabic around 900 CE. The text itself claims to have been discovered hidden in a Byzantine monastery vault by the Abbasid Caliph Al-Mu’tasim during a military expedition against the Eastern Roman Empire. It was engraved on sheets of gold leaf in Greek letters by Alexander the Great, containing secret teachings from his tutor Aristotle passed down from Hermes Trismegistus. In the ancient world it was common to attribute occult writings to a revered historical figure, and Greek philosophy was highly prized by Arab thinkers. Academics largely attribute the book’s authorship to the Sabeans of Harran, who had been an intellectual hub of the region for millennia. A copy of this grimoire was kept in the private library of the Ottoman royalty, possibly even utilized by the seemingly invincible Sultan Mehmet II in his legendary battles.

Election Standard

Book of the Treasure of Alexander states the astrological requirements to make the Talisman of Bilauanus: “…when Jupiter is in his cold and moist house which is Pisces …. place the Moon conjunct Jupiter in Pisces or Cancer..”

Both Jupiter and the Moon must be conjoined in the Ascendant or Midheaven, in the sign of Pisces or Cancer while the talisman is engraved on a palm-sized piece of lead weighing at least a half ounce.  Most of BTOA’s talismans require lengthy and complicated astrological configurations, making the opportunities extremely rare. These are conditions that only occur for a few days every twelve years in the best of cases.

In these elections, in the day and hour of Jupiter, Pisces was rising with the Moon applying to conjoin Jupiter. In the second, they were culminating in the midheaven with Cancer (the Moon's Domicile ruler and Jupiter's Exaltation ruler) rising.

All of these talismans were engraved by hand on lead, using a diamond tipped battery powered stylus. Each piece of lead weighs at least 0.8 ounces, the minimum required in the source material, and the surface area of each is at least as large as my palm. Every talisman was engraved to closely replicate the unique drawing provided in the manuscript, to include all 28 of the symbols surrounding the central figure. Before making them, I practiced with pencil and paper for several hours so that this complicated figure was second nature when the election window began.  After they were engraved, I suffumigated each with Jupiter incense and frankincense.

Each talisman includes a cloth bag to protect the skin against lead exposure while wearing it. A strong nylon cord is included so that it can be wrapped and secured further onto an ordinary belt and applied “upon the place of pain […] until the pain disappears.” It is not necessary to keep the metal itself pressed against bare skin. All who have used one of these talismans attest that the cloth bag does not hinder effectiveness.
